AERATION

A question we often get asked is, “Why do I need to poke holes in the ground?” Aeration is the process of relieving compacted soil by removing cores of soil. This allows the soil to expand and let air, water, and nutrients enter the root zone. There are several reasons that compacted soil can occur:

  • Lawn mowers move too fast on the lawn
  • Mowing during/after a heavy storm or wet soil
  • Same mowing pattern
  • High traffic pathways in the yard

Compacted soil

Compacted soil leads to many issues such as, but not limited to:

  • Water runoff
  • Restricted root zone of grass
  • Thin lawn in affected areas

You might be wasting water and fertilizer on the compacted areas of your lawn because they are not reaching the root zone of the grass. More importantly, the water and nutrients might be running off into the local water supply through the drainage system. As a result, if you see that water puddles on your lawn or takes a long time to drain, then your soil might be suffering from compaction.
